Prompt Engineering 101: How to Get the Best Answers from AI

Apr 18, 2025By Will Ruzvidzo

In the age of artificial intelligence, being knowledgeable—memorizing facts, or knowing where to go find them—isn’t nearly as valuable as learning how to ask great questions.

— Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI

Sam’s got a point. In AI, the right question is everything. A vague prompt leads to a generic, unhelpful response. But when you ask the right questions, AI delivers clear, useful, and actionable insights that save you from endless revisions and second-guessing.

To succeed in the AI era, you need to master the art of prompt engineering. This the practice of designing inputs that guide AI to produce relevant, high-quality answers. And if you're using AI regularly, it's a skill you need to build.

In this post, I’ll break down the basics of prompt engineering, what makes a prompt effective, and eight techniques to help you get better answers from AI every time you use it.

Why good prompt engineering matters

A well-structured prompt makes the difference between an insightful, relevant response and an answer that misses the mark. Here’s what a well-crafted prompt can do:

  • Improve accuracy by keeping AI focused
  • Save time by reducing revisions and rework
  • Lower costs if you're using a token-based model
  • Make automations run more smoothly
  • Scale your work more reliably

Let’s compare two prompts:

See the difference there? The second prompt gives AI a clear direction, making it much more likely to generate a response that’s relevant, structured, and actually useful. When you provide context and clear instructions, AI has a much better chance of delivering exactly what you need.

What makes a good AI prompt?

Before accepting an AI response, check it against these five qualities:

  • Relevance: Does it answer the question?
  • Clarity: Is it easy to read and understand?
  • Accuracy: Is the info correct? (Always fact-check.)
  • Conciseness: Is it focused, without fluff?
  • Consistency: Does AI give similar results when asked again?

If it’s off, don’t delete it. Just refine your prompt.

8 prompting techniques that actually work

Now that we’ve covered why strong prompts matter, let’s explore specific techniques to refine them:

1. Use the "act as" method to set clear AI roles

AI performs better when it has a clear role to play. By assigning a role, you provide context that helps shape the response to be more relevant and authoritative.

Example: “Act as a software engineer and explain how APIs work in simple terms.”

Why it works: This helps AI generate more technical and accurate explanations rather than a vague or overly simplified response.

When to use it: Use this method when you want AI to provide information from a specific point of view, such as a financial analyst, teacher, journalist, or consultant.

2. Get more relevant responses with few-shot learning

Want a certain tone, style, or structure? Show AI what you want by providing examples. By showing AI the kind of response you’re looking for, you improve the chances of getting a more refined and relevant answer.

Example: "Write a LinkedIn post that reflects the following tone and style, using the three provided examples as reference."

Why it works: AI will recognize the tone, structure, and style of the examples you’ve provided, allowing it to generate content that matches the examples more accurately.

When to use it: Use this technique when you want AI to write content in a specific tone of voice, format, or style, such as blog posts, or social media posts, especially when you have samples to guide it.

3. Use self-consistency to generate multiple responses for accuracy

AI responses can be inconsistent. Ask it to generate multiple responses and then compare them to identify the most frequently occurring or logical answer.

Example: "Generate three different key takeaways from a 2025 B2B content marketing trends report. Then, compare the responses and identify the most frequently occurring insights."

Why it works: This method helps AI refine its outputs by eliminating inconsistencies and prioritizing the most common, well-supported conclusions..

When to use it: Use self-consistency when summarizing research reports, identifying key industry trends, analyzing AI-generated data, or ensuring factual accuracy in content.

4. Structure step-by-step reasoning with chain of thought prompting

Encourage AI to break down complex tasks into logical steps, producing well-structured and thought-out responses.

Example: "Use a step-by-step approach to refine this AI-generated response:

Original response: The benefits of AI include efficiency, cost savings, and automation.

Step 1: Expand on each benefit with a real-world example.

Step 2: Clarify how AI achieves each benefit.

Step 3: Rephrase for clarity and conciseness."

Why it works: By explicitly instructing the AI to take a step-by-step approach, you force it to analyze the problem more thoroughly, improving the depth, coherence, and logical flow of its response

When to use it: This is particularly useful for content marketers, business owners, and freelancers who rely on AI to generate detailed and high-quality content, refine messaging, or structure strategic recommendations.

5. Use emotion prompting to improve response tone

Want AI to craft a response that feels more urgent, persuasive, or emotionally resonant? Adding context about the importance of the task can enhance accuracy and tone.

Example: “This is for a high-priority job interview. Provide a confident, persuasive response for a candidate discussing their leadership skills.”

Why it works: AI recognizes that the response needs to be concise, impactful, and persuasive, rather than a standard financial report.

When to use it: Use this method when you need AI to adjust its tone for press releases, investor briefings, sales pitches, or customer support interactions.

6. Explore multiple possibilities with tree of thought prompting

7. Get unstuck with meta-prompting

Meta-Prompting involves using AI to help generate a prompt for you when you're stuck or unsure what to ask next.

Example: “I’m stumped. Create a prompt that will help me come up with blog post ideas for a website that sells sustainable home goods.”

Why it works: Meta-Prompting lets AI take the reins and guide you in crafting better, more specific prompts when you’re unsure of your next move.

When to use it: Use this technique when you’re experiencing writer’s block, unsure how to ask for what you need, or looking for a fresh approach to generating ideas.

8. Use constraints and parameters to keep AI focused

Without clear constraints, AI might generate responses that are too long, too vague, or off-topic. Setting word limits, tone specifications, or formatting guidelines ensures AI stays within the boundaries you set.

Example: “Summarize this article in 100 words using a formal tone.”

Why it works: AI knows exactly how detailed or concise the response should be, eliminating unnecessary filler content.

When to use it: Use this technique when you need AI-generated responses to fit specific content requirements, such as social media captions, email subject lines, or formal reports.

Master AI by mastering your prompts

AI is a tool, but the way you use it determines its value. The key isn’t just in the technology, it’s in the prompts you give it. A well-structured prompt transforms AI from a generic response generator into a precision tool that works for you.

Refine your prompts, experiment with techniques, and stay intentional with how you ask AI to work. The better your prompts, the better your results. By applying these techniques, you take control over AI-generated responses and make them work for you.
